Attempting to answer the question, among others, “when does a revolutionary period begin?”, Cohen draws on the example of scientific paradigm shifts in the understanding of species’ change. He then extends outward to question leftist movements’ use of theory and ideology to foster, or more usually, get in the way of, the change they hope to create in the world. Cohen leaves the reader with the question “how is self organization possible?” as well as with an urgent understanding of its necessity.
